Since the Olympic Games in 2000, more than 35,000 kangaroos have been let loose in the streets of Sydney! Late August means a major event for the city and its residents. With sport and running deeply rooted in everyday life for Sydneysiders, the Sydney Marathon is a mustโ and not without reason! This marathon has earned its reputation: it features one of the most beautiful courses in the world, which follows the route of the 2000 Olympic marathon. Only the finish location has changed: the finish line is now set in front of the Sydney Opera House!
The course is a perfect blend of asphalt, culture, ocean, and nature. The Sydney Running Festival is a chance to discover Sydneyโs stunning urban landscapes, such as the Harbour Bridge, Moore Park, Centennial Park and of course the Opera House! But the route also takes a detour through natural spaces and history-soaked neighborhoods: the โThe Rocksโ neighborhood, wide green spaces, the Royal Botanic Garden, Circular Quay and many more! Whatโs more, the weather conditions are consistently bright, as the race takes place in spring. Participants can therefore enjoy the Australian sunshine without suffering oppressive heat. Thatโs a real advantage, because even though the race is flowing and fairly fast, it still features plenty of bridgesโand therefore quite a few short climbs.
Often sold out within a few hours, you have to plan well in advance to have a chance of securing a bib. Itโs no coincidence that the Sydney Marathon has become the 7th marathon in the World Majors series! Its reputation spans oceans, bringing together more than 40 different nationalities on the same start line. A true journey to Oceania, this marathon is one to savor kilometer after kilometer!
The Sydney Marathon course isnโt the easiestโfar less runnable than the Berlin Marathonโbut itโs well worth it. Each section of the route is unique and offers a different perspective on Australiaโs most populous city.
The Sydney Marathon is unmissable, so itโs very difficult to get a bib for this race!
Itโs part of the legendary World Majors family.
