The Chicago Marathon has, in recent years, become the stage for world records. Set in the heart of one of the most iconic cities in the United States, this marathon is one of the โ World Marathon Majors โ. Every year it attracts thousands of participants from around the world, all hoping to set new personal bests. Founded in 1905, the Chicago Marathon started modestly with just 15 runners, only 7 of whom crossed the finish line. After an interruption in 1920, the race returned in 1977 under the name Mayor Daley Marathon, in tribute to the cityโs former mayor Richard Daley.
This event is also a great way to discover โย The Windy City โย . The city earned this nickname for several reasons, but especially because it sits on the shore of Lake Michigan, which is very exposed to the wind. The start and finish take place in the legendary Grant Park. From there, runners will follow a route that takes them through more than 29 neighborhoods in the city! Participants will feel it in their legsโand feast their eyes, too.
The Chicago Marathon has built a reputation as an ultra-fast race, largely thanks to its flat course that lets runners push their limits. In 2023, Kelvin Kiptum made history by setting a new world record at this marathon, in 2:00:35. In 2024, it was runner Ruth Chepngetich who made headlines by taking the womenโs marathon world record in an impressive time of 2:09:57, once again proving just how fast Chicagoโs course can be.
Registering for the Chicago Marathon is no easy taskโif you want to secure a spot, youโll have to be persistent! Bib entries are snapped up quickly, and registration often requires planning months, or even years, in advance. With limited spots available, a lottery is in place, and for the lucky ones, that means a guaranteed bib on the start line. Itโs also possible to qualify with a time standard.
The Chicago Marathon showcases a unique blend of architectural and cultural diversity. After the Great Fire of 1871, Chicago rebuilt itself and became the birthplace of modern architecture.
Chicagoans are known for their hospitality and boundless enthusiasm! The course is energized by more than a million spectators, live bands, and DJs. The whole city is swept up in marathon fever, showing the world the magic of sport and celebration.
The Chicago Marathon is a rolling course and is renowned for being the fastest in the world. The menโs (Kelvin Kiptum, 2:00:35) and womenโs (Ruth Chepngetich, 2:09:56) marathon world records were set in Chicago. This course has produced 4 world records, meaning more records could still fall!
